Café Fifty Five, Thurnby

From a tired pavilion to a place of welcome

What began as a derelict sports pavilion has been reborn as Café Fifty Five, a thriving community café at the heart of Manor Field in Leicestershire. For more than a decade, St Luke’s Church and the local community carried a vision for a space that would be open to all, offering friendship, food, and practical support. The path was not straightforward, with many twists and setbacks, but the goal remained the same: to create a place of hospitality and hope.

“Archangel lived up to its name, with grace, professionalism and inexorable flexibility.” David Chiddick, former Chair of the Hub Steering Committee

Local residents gathering inside Café Fifty Five community building in Thurnby. Our role was to reimagine the existing building with simplicity and care. The design opens the pavilion to light and views, creates a clear and inviting entrance, and provides flexible, robust spaces that volunteers can run with confidence. The result is a building that feels easy to use and dignified for all who come through the door.

One year on, Café Fifty Five is already living out its mission, welcoming families, neighbours and those in need.

“A truly impressive building… already fulfilling the original mission — to be a welcoming place for all and provide support to those in need.” David Chiddick, former Chair of the Hub Steering Committee
