• A thoughtful response to planning challenges

Duxford Extension

A contemporary addition to a Grade II listed home

Set within a South Cambridgeshire village, this Grade II listed home needed a sensitive extension to create a light-filled space for modern family life. Previous proposals had been refused due to concerns over scale and impact on the historic building. Archangel was brought in to take a fresh approach—one that would respect the home’s character while unlocking its potential.

Understanding the sensitivities of working with listed buildings, we engaged proactively with the planning authority, rethinking the form and materiality of the extension. The final design introduces a contemporary yet respectful addition that sits comfortably within its historic setting.

Designed to Connect Old and New

  • Minimalist detailing and large areas of glazing ensure the extension remains visually lightweight
  • A fully glazed link creates a clear distinction between old and new
  • A rotated footprint preserves views of the original rear elevation
  • Sun studies and careful massing minimise overshadowing to neighbouring properties

A Light-Filled, Flexible Space

The completed extension provides a generous open-plan space for dining and relaxing, seamlessly connecting to the garden while maintaining a strong relationship with the historic home.

By balancing heritage considerations with a contemporary approach, this project showcases how thoughtful design can transform a listed home for future generations.
